The long-standing demand for safer pedestrian crossings on the Delhi–Haridwar National Highway (NH-334) is finally set to be fulfilled. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved the construction of Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) at two high-risk locations—Coer College Chowk and Mandawali—to improve road safety and prevent accidents.

Both locations witness heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement daily, especially students, local residents, and commuters. Due to the absence of safe crossing facilities, pedestrians are forced to cross the busy highway, increasing the risk of fatal accidents. The proposed FOBs will allow people to cross the road safely without disrupting traffic flow.

According to officials, each FOB will be approximately 33 metres long and five metres wide, with ramps and staircases designed for easy access. The estimated cost for each bridge is around ₹2.5 crore. The structures will be constructed with modern safety standards and proper lighting to ensure visibility at night.

NHAI officials confirmed that preliminary planning has been completed and construction work will begin soon. Once completed, these foot over bridges are expected to enhance pedestrian safety, reduce traffic disruptions, and provide a safer environment for thousands of daily commuters.

Mr Anuj, a BTech graduate of the 2025 batch, spoke to media representatives and expressed serious concern over the frequent accidents occurring on the highway near the college area. He highlighted the urgent need for improved pedestrian safety measures to prevent further mishaps.

Sharing similar concerns, Mr Aditya Bhandari, Mr Vasu, Mr Anis, Mr Ashish, Mr Vivek and Mr Nimit Dubey final-year students of COER University and residents of Friends PG Roorkee near COER, stated that crossing the busy road daily while commuting to college poses a significant risk. They emphasized that the construction of a foot over bridge would greatly enhance safety for students and pedestrians, especially during peak hours.

The Managing Director and Executive Director of Friends PG near COER College (university) also welcomed the proposed initiative, appreciating the authorities’ decision to address the long-standing safety concerns of students. They stated that the move reflects a responsible approach toward safeguarding the lives of students studying at COER University and called it a positive and much-needed step in the interest of public safety.
