A dramatic wildlife rescue operation took place in Lalpur Podowali village of Laksar, Haridwar district, on Tuesday. Forest department officer Gurjant Singh was seriously injured while rescuing a 12-foot-long python that had entered a residential area. Despite the danger, the team successfully captured the python and safely released it into the forest.

According to witnesses, panic spread across the village after the large reptile was spotted near homes. Residents immediately informed the forest department, and a rescue team led by officer Gurjant Singh reached the location. During the rescue, the python suddenly turned aggressive and bit Singh’s arm, causing deep injuries. His teammates reacted swiftly, freeing him from the python’s grip and rushing him to a nearby hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.

Forest officials said that the python was unusually aggressive, likely due to stress. “The team followed all safety protocols, but such incidents can occur unexpectedly,” said the local ranger. He added that Gurjant Singh displayed exceptional courage and that the department will extend full support to him and his family.

After the rescue, villagers expressed relief and praised the quick response of the forest department, saying that timely action prevented a potential tragedy. Officials also noted that python and snake sightings rise sharply in Uttarakhand’s plains after the monsoon, especially in Haridwar, Laksar, and Manglaur regions.

Experts have urged forest staff to always use proper safety gear such as snake hooks, leather gloves, and rescue sticks during such operations. They also advised the public to avoid approaching wild reptiles and to immediately contact the forest department in case of sightings.

This incident not only highlights the bravery of frontline forest officers but also serves as a reminder of the risks involved in wildlife rescues.
