Haridwar Natural Gas Pvt. Ltd. (HNGPL), a joint venture of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and GAIL Gas Limited, has inaugurated a Piped Natural Gas (PNG) facility at the campus of Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, marking a significant milestone in promoting sustainable energy and modern infrastructure.

The facility was inaugurated by Rahul Tandon, Business Head (BPCL – Gas), along with Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee. The event was also attended by U. P. Singh, Vivek Vohra, and Naveen Kumar, along with other senior officials from HNGPL and the institute.

Originally planned through a main steel pipeline, the project was expedited due to recent LPG supply challenges. To ensure uninterrupted gas supply, HNGPL implemented Phase I using a Daughter Compression Unit (DCU), enabling timely commissioning of the PNG facility.

As part of the infrastructure rollout, over 15,000 meters of MDPE pipeline has already been laid across the campus. The project further includes extending PNG connectivity to 14 Bhawan mess facilities and installing risers in over 1,000 residential units. HNGPL is working closely with the Institute Works Department (IWD) of IIT Roorkee to provide PNG access to every kitchen on campus.

This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision of promoting PNG as a cleaner, safer, and more reliable alternative to conventional fuels. The facility is expected to enhance convenience for students and residents, ensure uninterrupted energy supply, and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

With this development, IIT Roorkee continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability while embracing modern and efficient energy solutions
